Happy Healthy Children
At Torrisholme and Morecambe Kindergartens, we always promote healthy eating. A balanced diet is important for your child to continue their growth and development. At the kindergartens, we are involved in following healthy eating initiatives; the Smiling For Life project and Healthy Heroes, a scheme set out by Lancashire Healthy Schools Programme. Menus are displayed in reception. Information regarding allergens in food is displayed in our handbook.
At the kindergartens, the children are offered a healthy snack mid morning and mid afternoon to help keep their little engines running until their next mealtime. The snacktimes include sliced fruit, raw vegetables, toast, breadsticks and crackers. Sometimes, the snacks are links to the themes we are exploring in the kindergarten, such as Chinese New Year or Diwali. Special diets can be catered for to meet your child’s dietary needs. The children are given the option to drink milk or water. Children have free access to water all day.
Mealtimes are full of learning experiences at the kindergarten, where children feel relaxed and comfortable. We help to teach the children to make healthy choices and the importance of manners at mealtimes. When the children feel they are ready, they have to opportunity to self-serve and learn to do things by themselves. Children have a choice between a hot lunch provided by the kindergarten or bringing their own packed lunch from home. The kindergarten has a healthy and nutritious menu with a variety of meals from different cultures to allow the children to experiment with different foods, smells and textures. We also grow some of our own fresh fruit and vegetables at the kindergarten, which we incorporate into our menus. A hot meal can be ordered 24 hours in advance.
Children in the Baby Room should bring their own formula milk and food. When your child is ready to start weaning, we will encourage them to try different foods at the kindergarten to give them the chance to experiment.
If your child has specific dietary requirements, we will do our very best to accommodate their individual diet.
Both kindergartens hold a 5 star food hygiene rating and each member of staff has a food hygiene certificate and are knowledgeable on children’s diets. If you need any advice on portion size or dietary requirements, don’t hesitate to ask the manager or your child’s key person and they will be happy to help.
At the kindergartens, we constantly promote physical development and encourage the children to take part in active healthy lifestyle. The children have the opportunity to run and exercise throughout the day in our free flow settings.
Active Kids physical activity program has recently been introduced at the kindergarten. Staff are providing new fun exercise programs outdoors, which the children can participate in. We have lots of new equipment for the children to enjoy.
